COVER LETTER:

This is the schedule for the 18cm NME on 31 October 2011
involving 12 antennas: Ef Wb Jb1 On Mc Tr Sv Zc Bd Ur Sh Hh

The NME uses a standard setup with 512 Mbps,
otherwise it is somewhat unusual.

In addition to the usual ftp fringe finding, the main
purpose of this NME is to collect test data to use with the primary
beam correction model of the future multi-phase-center experiments,
including EP077 and EG057 in the L-band segment of this session.

Unfortunately no standard EVN fringe-finder is visible
to all antennas for this time interval. Thus we use
two strong compact sources from the RRFID VLBA database:

J1925+2106 (in Sep 2008 S-band flux ~1.4 Jy, X-band flux ~0.9 Jy)
J2023+3153 (in Jan 2009 S-band flux ~0.9 Jy, X-band flux ~0.4 Jy)

Since Ef has the smallest beam size in the EVN (FWHM ~ 6 arcmin at 18 cm),
it was chosen as the offset unit. Test pointings are done to a number
of positions offset from J1925+2106:

OFF+0.5D -- 0.5 Ef beam (1.5 arcmin) in positive Dec direction
OFF+1.5D -- 1.5 Ef beam (4.5 arcmin) in positive Dec direction
OFF+2.0D -- 2.0 Ef beam (6.0 arcmin) in positive Dec direction
OFF+4.0D -- 4.0 Ef beam (12 arcmin) in positive Dec direction

FWHM positions are sampled in a cross pattern

OFF+1.0R -- 1.0 Ef beam radius (3 arcmin) in positive RA direction
OFF-1.0R -- 1.0 Ef beam radius (3 arcmin) in negative RA direction
OFF+1.0D -- 1.0 Ef beam radius (3 arcmin) in positive Dec direction
OFF-1.0D -- 1.0 Ef beam radius (3 arcmin) in negative Dec direction

J2023+3153 is used only for the ftp testing (if J1925+2106 is
unsuitable for some reason).

There is no phase referencing section in this experiment.

Four ftp tests are scheduled:

~12:23:10 UT (scan 5, 4 sec, J1925+2106)
~13:26:20 UT (scan 21, 8 sec, J1925+2106)
~14:09:30 UT (scan 31, 8 sec, J2023+3153)
~14:56:00 UT (scan 42, 4 sec, J2023+3153)

Two 8 sec ftp samples are chosen for the (hopefully improbable) case
of both sources turning out to be unusually weak.

Please make sure that the autoftp is set up correctly.

Good luck with the session! And happy Halloween :)

Yurii

The solar corona can cause unstable phases for sources too close to the Sun.
SCHED provides warnings at individual scans for distances less than 10 degrees.
The distance from the Sun to each source in this schedule is:

Barry Clark estimates from predictions by Ketan Desai of IPM scattering sizes
that the Sun will cause amplitude reductions on the longest VLBA baselines
at a solar distance of 60deg F^(-0.6) where F is in GHz.
For common VLBI bands, this is:
       327 MHz 117. deg
